Moody San Diego Sunset Cliffs Elopement - J & C

Sunset Cliffs has always been a favorite spot for couples seeking a beautiful yet intimate setting for their vows. While its name might suggest a preference for sunsets (I’m not going to lie, they are pretty epic under the right conditions), there’s a different charm to the cliffs under a moody, overcast sky. The subdued light casts a soft, ethereal glow over everything, creating a romantic atmosphere that’s perfect for a couple looking for a serene and unique experience.

J & C decided to elope in San Diego because it holds a special significance to the two of them. Their love for hiking and unwavering love for one another helped shaped their vision for a more intimate wedding ceremony. Sunset Cliffs in San Diego most definitely fulfilled their desires for what they truly value: each other. It was such an honor getting to know the two of them and photographing such special moments in their lives.

We started off at the Marriott in downtown San Diego for detail and getting ready while C skeedadled off to Balboa Park to get ready for their first look. As with all first looks, each one is unique but equally as special. As I positioned my camera for J and C’s first look at Balboa Park, anticipation filled the air. Sunlight filtered through the columns of the organ pavilion, warming their faces as C turned towards J. J’s smile illuminated the moment, while Cody’s joy reflected their deep connection. Each glance and soft laugh was incredibly touching, making it a privilege to document this significant chapter in their journey.

We then headed to Sunset Cliffs for their ceremony. As the ceremony began, the clouds above created a soft, even light that enveloped the scene in a gentle glow. The lack of direct sunlight allowed for a more intimate and emotional ambiance. J & C stood close together, their faces lit with the warmth of their love rather than the warmth of the sun. Their vows were heartfelt and personal, and you can truly see how much they truly cherish one another.

One of my favorite moments to capture was when J and C shared a quiet embrace after their first kiss as a married couple. We often forget that slowing down is vital in enjoying these small moments. The overcast sky acted as a giant softbox, diffusing the light and highlighting the tender connection between them. This moment, free from the harsh shadows and bright highlights of direct sunlight, was pure magic.
